Engaged Views: The YouTube Number San Antonio Sponsors Will Actually Pay For

The number under your latest episode went up in late August. Your audience didn't. YouTube changed what counts as a "view," and the people who buy podcast ads noticed within a month. Here is what changed, what the honest number looks like on a real San Antonio show, and the six numbers to put in a 2027 media kit.

In plain English

What YouTube Changed, and When

On August 24, 2026, with about five business days' notice, YouTube redefined the public view. A view now counts from the first frame of playback across Shorts, long-form, podcasts and live. A thumbnail that autoplays while someone hovers over it can register a view.

The old definition didn't disappear. It was renamed the engaged view: someone clicked to watch, or kept watching past the opening seconds. YouTube says most analytics, including click-through rate, average view duration and retention, stay anchored to engaged views. Creator earnings and Partner Program eligibility didn't change. Only the big public number did.

Private

Engaged view

Only in YouTube Studio and the Analytics API.

  1. YouTube's new public view definition takes effect.
  2. Podtrac analyzes 84.2 million views on YouTube podcast channels: 64% engaged on episodes, 58% on other videos.
  3. ADOPTER Media, Right Side Up and Oxford Road commit to engaged views for YouTube buying at the Sounds Profitable Business Summit. YMH Studios says it will report only engaged views.
  4. Media plans from those buyers count YouTube impressions as engaged views.

See the gap

How Far Apart Are the Two Numbers?

You may have seen the claim that public views run up to 2.5x engaged views. That figure was an estimate from ADOPTER Media's Glenn Rubenstein. The measured number is smaller, and it is the one to quote. Pick a content type below to see how many of every 100 public views are engaged.

The pattern matters more than any one number. Full episodes hold up best. Someone who presses play on a 40-minute conversation usually meant to. Short-form drifts furthest, because feeds autoplay and thumbs scroll. A show that grew mostly on Shorts and Reels has the widest gap between its public counter and its real audience.

Inside YouTube Studio

What It Looks Like on a Real San Antonio Show

Here are the last 28 days of a San Antonio interview show we produce, pulled from YouTube Studio's Advanced mode. We hid the channel name. Every number is exactly as Studio reports it, and the whole window falls after the August 24 change.

YouTube Studio Advanced mode table for a San Antonio podcast over 28 days: 5,680 views and 2,616 engaged views in total; full episodes 976 views, 632 engaged, 11:46 average view duration; Shorts 4,689 views, 1,982 engaged, 0:24 average view duration
YouTube Studio → Analytics → Advanced mode, broken down by content type, with Views and Engaged views side by side. Channel hidden.
5,680 → 2,616Whole channel. The public counter shows 5,680. Engaged views come to 2,616, about 46%. Most of the gap is Shorts.
976 → 632Full episodes. 65% of views are engaged, almost exactly Podtrac's 64%. This is the number a sponsor's host read lives inside.
11:46Average view duration on episodes. People who choose to watch stay for nearly 12 minutes, well past where a mid-roll read usually runs.
0:24Average view on Shorts. Shorts bring discovery, not sponsor exposure. Report them separately and never add them to episode reach.

Then switch the breakdown to Cities. This is where a local show earns its rate card. Over 90 days, San Antonio was 6.1% of this show's views but 14.7% of its watch time. Local viewers averaged 4:15 per view against 1:56 for the channel as a whole, about 2.2x the attention.

YouTube Studio cities report for a San Antonio podcast over 90 days: 22,980 views, 12,149 engaged views and 399.8 watch hours in total; San Antonio, TX leads with 1,402 views, 824 engaged views, 58.6 watch hours (14.7%) and a 4:15 average view duration
Same channel, last 90 days, broken down by city. San Antonio leads every column, and its viewers watch about 2.2x longer than average.

A quick tip from pulling these reports: YouTube only lists cities that clear a privacy threshold, so short date ranges can show a single city. Use a 90-day window for geography. The warning icon next to "Views" on a 90-day report means the range spans the August 24 change, so compare engaged views across that boundary, never public views.

Why buyers moved

Why the Biggest Buyers Stopped Trusting the Public Counter

Advertisers pay for people who saw and heard the message. A count that starts at the first frame includes people who never did. In September, ADOPTER Media, Right Side Up and Oxford Road said they will count YouTube impressions as engaged views for 2027 buying. Podtrac now uses engaged views for its podcast rankings, and YMH Studios says it will report only engaged views and has asked other networks to commit publicly.

There is a wrinkle. The honest number is private. Engaged views are not shown on the watch page and are not in YouTube's public Data API. A sponsor who looks your show up will see the bigger public number, and your media kit will show a smaller one. That gap is not a weakness to hide. Explaining it is how you earn trust.

Measurement across the industry is still fragmented. The IAB defines a video play as 50% of pixels on screen for two seconds, and the IAB Tech Lab's podcast measurement guidelines don't define a "play" at all. Whoever explains their method clearly wins the sponsor's trust.

The local angle

What This Means for a San Antonio Show Selling to Local Businesses

National agencies are not the buyers for most San Antonio shows. The real buyer is a local business: a law firm, a clinic, a builder, a restaurant group. They buy outcomes. A sponsor who pays for "20,000 views," gets two calls, and later learns the real audience was half that won't renew. In a city this connected, they'll mention it at the next chamber event too.

  • Most local shows grow on clips. Clips show the biggest gap, so they need the most careful reporting.
  • Local share beats raw reach. "1,400 engaged views per episode, with San Antonio the top city by watch time" sells a single-location business better than "35,000 views" from everywhere.
  • Before-and-after comparisons are broken. Public views from before August 24 and after it measure different things. The definition changed, not your audience.

Media Kit Reality Check

Enter your public average per episode from the last 30 or 90 days. If you have engaged views from Studio, enter those too. If not, we'll estimate them from Podtrac's benchmarks.

Lead your kit with "about 1,500 engaged views per episode" and keep the public counter off the page.

The estimate uses Podtrac's August 2026 averages for episodes and clips, and our own measured Shorts ratio. Your channel will differ, so use Studio's real number when you have it.

The framework

The Defensible Stack: Six Numbers for a 2027 Media Kit

A media kit only works if a sponsor can check it. Build yours in six layers, from the number buyers now require down to the proof a local business actually buys. Tap a layer to see what to report and where to find it.

1Engaged viewsThe number buyers now use

Report: average engaged views per episode over 30 or 90 days.

Find it: Studio → Analytics → Advanced mode → Metrics → add "Engaged views."

Why it holds up: it's the definition major buyers adopted for 2027.

2AttentionProof the host read is seen

Report: average view duration and average percentage viewed on full episodes.

Find it: same Advanced mode table. Break it down by content type.

Why it holds up: an 11-minute average view tells a sponsor exactly how far into the episode their read can sit.

3AudioKept separate, never added

Report: 30-day downloads per episode from an IAB-certified podcast host.

Find it: your hosting dashboard (Buzzsprout, Libsyn, Megaphone and others).

Why it holds up: downloads and views measure different things. Adding them together is the fastest way to lose a careful buyer.

4Local shareWhat local sponsors care about most

Report: San Antonio's share of watch time, plus Texas and U.S. shares.

Find it: Advanced mode → Breakdown → Cities (use 90 days) and Geography.

Why it holds up: a single-location business is buying the people who can drive to it.

5Committed audienceSubscribers and paying fans

Report: subscribers, returning viewers, and paid members (Spotify, Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, Patreon).

Find it: Studio → Audience tab, plus each membership platform.

Why it holds up: people paying for your show are the hardest audience to argue with.

6ProofWhat a local business actually buys

Report: promo code redemptions, landing page visits, and results from past sponsors.

Find it: your sponsors' booking or point-of-sale data, plus a unique URL per sponsor.

Why it holds up: it's the number the owner checks before renewing.

One sentence

The Methodology Line That Builds Sponsor Trust

Put this line at the bottom of every media kit, rate card and sponsor report. It answers the question "why is your number smaller than what I see on YouTube?" before anyone asks it. Fill in your details and copy it.

YouTube figures are Engaged Views from YouTube Studio, July 24 – October 21, 2026. The public view counter is not used. Audio figures are 30-day downloads per episode from your IAB-certified host.

Keep it clean

Five Media Kit Habits to Retire

01

Adding YouTube views, downloads and clip views into one "reach" number.

02

Screenshotting the public view counter.

03

Comparing public views from before and after August 24, 2026.

04

Showing lifetime totals as if they were per-episode results.

05

Promising a bigger audience than a sponsor will actually experience.

Beyond sponsors

Your Media Kit Now Serves Paying Fans Too

Spotify launched memberships on October 20, 2026. Creators keep 90% of membership revenue and can offer several tiers. Eligibility runs through Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, with at least 100 consumption hours, 100 listeners or viewers, and three episodes. Apple Podcasts plays HLS video inside a single episode and says video is coming to Podcasts Subscriptions in more than 170 countries.

That makes layer five more valuable every quarter. A small, local audience that pays is a stronger sponsor story than a large, passive one, and it is the audience who actually listens through to the host read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an engaged view on YouTube?

An engaged view is YouTube's name for the old definition of a view: someone clicked to watch, or kept watching past the opening seconds. Since August 24, 2026, the public view counter starts at the first frame, including autoplay. Engaged views appear only in YouTube Studio and the YouTube Analytics API.

How much do YouTube views overstate a podcast's audience?

Podtrac analyzed 84.2 million views on YouTube podcast channels on August 27–28, 2026. Engaged views were 64% of views on podcast episodes and 58% on other channel videos, so the public counter reads about 1.56x high on episodes and 1.72x on clips. The often-quoted 2.5x figure was an estimate, not a measurement.

Where do I find engaged views in YouTube Studio?

Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, choose Advanced mode, and add "Engaged views" from the Metrics menu. Break the report down by content type to separate full episodes from Shorts, or by city to see your local share.

Which advertisers buy on engaged views?

ADOPTER Media, Right Side Up and Oxford Road said in September 2026 that they will count YouTube impressions as engaged views for 2027 buying. Podtrac uses engaged views for its podcast rankings, and YMH Studios says it will report only engaged views.

Did the view change affect YouTube earnings?

No. YouTube says Partner Program eligibility is unchanged, and earning is still tied to engaged views on public content. Only the public view counter changed.

Should I add YouTube views and podcast downloads together in my media kit?

No. Report engaged YouTube views and 30-day audio downloads from an IAB-certified host as separate lines. They measure different behavior, and combining them is the fastest way to lose a careful sponsor's trust.

The part you never have to think about

You bring the conversation. We handle everything after.

A room at I-10 and 410 with the gear already bought, already set, already rolling — Shure SM7B microphones into a RØDEcaster Pro II, Sony Alpha 6400 4K cameras, a professional teleprompter, and acoustic treatment that is already done arguing with your voice.

Then the part most shows never get to. The edit, the clips, the written page, the scheduling — handled, so an hour in the studio turns into a month of content instead of a file sitting on a drive.
